The recent Day of the Devs online presentation revealed a number of fascinating upcoming titles, but one in particular has seized attention: UN:Me. Developed by Historia and Shueisha Games, this solo experience appears to blend the oppressive atmosphere of a Silent Hill title with the suspicion-driven heart of Among Us.
"This is a distinctive game where a girl harboring several personalities inside her must escape from a labyrinth of the psyche," explains developer Yasukazu Kawai.
In UN:Me, players assume the role of an unnamed female protagonist seeming to be of high school age. Inside her reside four distinct souls, all possessing unique anxieties and motivations. These souls can seize control spontaneously, unleashing their innermost terrors upon her without warning.
Judging by showcased footage, much of the narrative takes place within a creepy medical facility, while other scenes depict the main character navigating a abandoned chapel.
"What are you afraid of? What makes you uncomfortable?" asks game director Shun Sasaki. "Heights. Small rooms. Authority figures. Elements that appear minor to other people can activate something primal inside us. This game delves into that idea — anxieties that are unique to each person."
The central mechanic revolves around controlling the persona that surfaces at any given moment. However, these souls will switch involuntarily as you play. While exploring, every persona's fears become amplified and assault the girl in succession. As the persona shifts, so does the particular terror the player encounters.
At first glance, UN:Me shares striking visual similarities with the Silent Hill series. The hospital is filled with orderlies who all share the same face, with disturbingly broad grins. Figures in the lobby have enormous blooms where their necks should be. Flowers are an ever-present theme, contrasting organic elegance with supernatural dread.
Yet, UN:Me introduces a unique twist. Players are tasked with deducing which of the four entities haunting the protagonist is the "true" one. "Each of the souls asserts that the body belongs to them," explains a creator. "Throughout the game, you need to figure out who is real."
After a player have deduced a persona is fake, they are forced to destroy it. But, because every entity can deceive or obfuscate the truth, it is very easy to make a mistake.
"Maybe you've already destroyed the real [soul] with your own hands," a voice suggests. "The final entity standing might be a fraud. In any case, your decisions are irreversible."
UN:Me currently lacks a confirmed release date, but it is can be wishlist on platforms.
