The Reason Real Madrid Have 'Utter Trust' in Youngster Pitarch

The young midfielder playing
Thiago Pitarch has played seven matches for the Spanish giants, featuring five appearances in the starting lineup.

Whenever a 18-year-old creates Real Madrid a historic moment in a key Champions League tie against City, it naturally attracts acclaim and the spotlight.

In only his maiden start in the tournament - and fifth appearance for the team - the young midfielder made a strong impression as the 15-time European champions secured a three-nil round of 16 first leg lead at the Santiago Bernabeu.

The young player, who also made his club debut in the play-off round a few weeks prior with a cameo off the bench at Sporting Lisbon, then assisted Los Blancos defeat the English champions in the midweek second leg to confirm a last eight berth.

At 18 years old, Pitarch became the club's most youthful starter to start twice in the Champions League's latter rounds, beating star Vinicius Jr's record by a week and a half.

Rapid Ascent Through La Fabrica

The midfielder is the latest to come through from the famed youth system and is quickly establishing himself as one of the manager's most exciting protegees.

He joined Madrid from CD Leganes in the summer of 2023, having previously been with Atletico and Getafe academies, and starting out for the Juvenil C team, where he quickly made a positive impact.

He worked his way up to the reserve side and it was in a pre-season game in which they faced the senior squad, then managed by the former defender, where the teenager is said to have drawn the eye of the present manager, who took over from the previous coach in the new year.

Spanish media would later describe the moment as "love at first sight," noting he stood out not only for his skill on the ball, but for the vitality, character and drive he brought to the team.

'His Greatest Quality Remains His Character'

In the pre-season of 2025, former boss Alonso invited the youngster to practice with the first team and awarded him playing time during pre-season.

However, it was Arbeloa's appointment that became the turning point in his career as he was introduced as a late substitute in both ties against the Portuguese side that set up the meeting with Pep Guardiola's team.

"I have dreamed of this each night before going to bed, the first day I began playing the game, every day you go to train and every day you have a game," said Pitarch after his debut.

"I've just achieved my ambition with the best team in the world and in the top tournament."

Given a starting debut in La Liga against Getafe - where he spent four years after arriving from Atletico in 2018 - he has retained his place for the following four as injuries to Jude Bellingham and Dani Ceballos provided an opening.

Pitarch has seized it with displays that have belied his youth and inexperience.

"He is a very quick footballer, and you can see his capabilities," remarked Arbeloa. "He's incredibly dynamic, with excellent stamina, work-rate and movement."

Pitarch's mentality has also impressed his manager.

"His standout trait is his personality," continued he. "He constantly demands the possession, and even under pressure, he doesn't feel it.

"I realize people are astonished to see him make his debut in a Champions League match, but he's playing because I had total trust in him to do what he usually does.

"Thiago will continue to get chances with the main squad. It is delightful to coach a talent like him."

A Future International Decision

Born in a Madrid suburb, in the Spanish capital's community, and grew up deeply involved in the local game, moving through local academies before entering Real Madrid's renowned La Fabrica system.

He holds both Moroccan and Spanish citizenship, giving him the option to represent both nations at senior international level.

Under international regulations, footballers may represent different countries at youth level without being permanently tied, with the final decision only binding once they appear in a competitive full international.

Pitarch has featured for the Spanish national team at underage levels, representing both the under-19 and U20 teams, and took part in the 2025 Youth World Cup, where Spain made it to the last eight.

Nevertheless, he has yet to commit to either full national side, who are watching his progress with interest.

Speaking recently, the player confirmed: "I haven't made my final decision so far. Things are great with the Spanish federation, but I'll make a conclusion in the near future."

This scenario mirrors that of other bi-national talents such as Real team-mate Diaz and Barca star Lamine Yamal. Whereas teenage Yamal opted for Spain, Diaz opted to play for the Atlas Lions.

Eyes on the Prize

For now, his attention is on establishing himself in the Real side and repaying Arbeloa's faith.

He played 74 minutes in the 2-1 victory at City, which completed a five-one aggregate success and a quarter-final matchup with the German champions.

He was replaced by another academy player in Angel underscored Arbeloa's trust in younger players to aid the club chase trophies to come.

Following his impressive impact to date on the Champions League, Pitarch is expected to play a key role in that.

"The manager handles me the same. We deal with it very naturally. I attempt not to overanalyze it too much - I have to earn my playing time on the field," he commented after the success at Manchester.
