In October of last year, the late-night programming block saw the return of its offbeat hit, Smiling Friends. However, later that same month, the channel unveiled a fresh animated series with a strikingly different feel. Haha, You Clowns proved to be gentle and comforting, reminiscent of a cartoon version of a serene talk show. In an era often characterized by dark humor, this show's earnestness resonated deeply and turned it into a breakout hit.
On December 18th, the network revealed exciting news: Haha, You Clowns has been greenlit for two additional seasons. This provides showrunner Joe Cappa ample opportunity to expand upon the story of the Campbell family. The show follows three polite teenage brothers whose primary trait is their deep love for their single father, with Cappa portraying for all four key characters.
"My deepest thanks go to the fans of the show who gave *Haha, You Clowns* a chance and spread the word," remarked Cappa. "Iâm incredibly thrilled that I get to hang out at the Campbell household for a little longer."
In the same announcement praise from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who called the series as "radically heartfelt and uniquely eerie." He thanked the fans who discovered the show and advocated for its peculiarly charming style.
"All of you got behind this new show, praised it on social media, and expanded its audience week over week so we could greenlight not one, but two more seasons," commented Ouweleen. "In the words: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
Earlier this fall, Haha, You Clowns was hailed as "a gentle counterpart" to more cynical adult animated fare. It offers something unexpectedly cozy about following this charming family go about their daily lives.
At the time, creator Joe Cappa expressed his goal to help comedy break out of its long-running sarcastic tone. He linked this trend to various cultural shifts.
âWe're stuck in a cycle of irony that we are trapped in,â noted Cappa. âThe attitude is that we have to know weâre the cleverest viewer in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for 10 years, and we must laugh at something different now. It's time for comedy to grow.â
Now, with Haha, You Clowns locked in for the future, Cappa may well be part of that change he described. At a minimum, the renewal ensures audiences a little more time to experience the gentle humor of the unique Campbell clan.
The final episode of Season 1 of Haha, You Clowns airs on December 21st. The complete first season is available for streaming on HBO Max.
