Russian President Vladimir Putin Vows Steady Energy Deliveries to India in Rebuff of Washington Demands

Amid a defiant message to the United States, President Vladimir Putin informed Prime Minister Narendra Modi that Russia remains committed to guarantee “unbroken” supplies of oil to India. These remarks came as the two leaders met in New Delhi and asserted their relationship were “immune to outside influence.”

A Signal Directed at the United States

This affirmation, issued after the annual summit, was widely seen to be a direct challenge at western countries, that have sought to pressure New Delhi into curtailing its longstanding links with Moscow. The context comes after previous American measures, including the imposition of import duties targeting New Delhi over its buying of Moscow's energy exports.

“Moscow remains a trustworthy exporter of fuel and anything required for the development of India’s energy sector,” Putin stated. “Russia is prepared to continue ensuring the steady flow of fuel for the booming Indian economy.”

The Indian leader, while not naming energy specifically, supported the sentiment by stating that “secure fuel supplies has been a strong and important foundation of the bilateral partnership.”

Defying Washington's Stance

Prior to the talks, in a television interview, Putin had questioned American pressure over India's dealings with Russia. Putin stated, “Should America can claim the privilege to buy our atomic materials, why shouldn’t India claim the same privilege?”

The visit represented his initial visit to India after the onset of the conflict in Ukraine, and Moscow and Delhi undertook a deliberate attempt to project that the friendship between the two leaders was undisturbed.

A Warm Greeting

Employing an notable step, the Indian PM personally greeted Putin right off the plane. Both leaders shared a warm hug akin to close allies before having a closed-door supper on Thursday evening.

He later described India's partnership with Russia as “a beacon” and noted it was “built on reciprocal esteem and deep trust.”

Reaffirming Defence and Economic Cooperation

The meeting produced several important deals in the fields of defence and trade relations. A cornerstone agreement was the completion of an joint economic plan extending until 2030, which sets a goal to double commerce to one hundred billion dollars per year by the target year.

The leaders also agreed to recalibrate their strategic cooperation. Even as Russia is still India's largest exporter of arms, its share has reduced in recent years as India aims to widen its sources.

The official release highlighted cooperation in the collaborative manufacturing of cutting-edge military systems, even if explicit mention of deals for the Su-57 fighter jet were not made.

Ultimately, both nations restated that amid the “ongoing challenging, tense, and unpredictable global landscape, their relationship continue to be resilient to external pressure.”
