Russell Wilson Responds at Former Coach Sean Payton Over Quarterback Comments

New York Giants quarterback Russell Wilson did not hold back on social media this Tuesday, reacting to recent criticism from his former coach Sean Payton.

"Classless... but not surprised...," Wilson declared on X. "Had no idea you're still offering rewards 15+ years later through the press."

Wilson's remarks pointed to the notorious bounty scandal issue from 2009-11, when Payton was coaching the Saints.

At that time, the league found that the Saints had rewarded players for making hard hits on opponents. Consequently, Payton received a suspension from the league for a full year.

What Sparked the Recent Dispute

The quarterback's response came after Payton delivered comments after Denver's remarkable comeback win over the New York. Payton remarked that the Giants had "discovered new energy" with their new QB, who has taken over Wilson as the first-string QB.

Moreover, Payton hinted that he had informed team owner John Mara that he would prefer facing Wilson instead of Dart.

"I spoke to John Mara recently and I said, 'We were hoping that the switch would've happened long after our game,'" the coach stated.

Background of the Coach-QB Relationship

  • The quarterback joined the Broncos from Seattle in 2022 and inked a five-year, $245 million extension.
  • The team went 4 wins and 11 losses in his debut year before the team brought in Payton, who was coming back to the sidelines after a period in TV commentary.
  • The coach replaced Wilson late into the 2023 campaign, a move that prevented the quarterback from getting injured.

Had Wilson remained on the roster by March 2024, his $37 million pay for the following year would have been locked in. Ultimately, Wilson was let go, ending the contentious split between the player and his mentor.
