A prominent South African media personality and entertainer has been fatally gunned down in the metropolis of Johannesburg, triggering widespread grief across a country battling persistent crime.
Warrick Stock, widely recognized as DJ Warras, was shot and killed in the central business district on the afternoon of Tuesday.
Authorities reported the 40-year-old media personality was approached by three individuals, one of whom began shooting at him before escaping on foot.
The purpose of the attack has not been established and no arrests have been made, police said.
Law enforcement indicated that Stock was targeted as he was leaving a building near the Carlton Centre.
He had devoted time at the building supervising the setup of security systems, which had been illegally inhabited by unknown people, according to reports.
"The report indicates the victim was approached by three unknown suspects after parking his vehicle, and they began shooting at him before escaping on foot," a police statement confirmed.
CCTV footage reportedly captured a suspect with dreadlocked hair and wearing what resembled a guard's attire opening fire on Stock before fleeing.
The DJ tried to run away after he was hit but succumbed to his injuries a short distance away.
Police added that Stock had an unused firearm and it was not a robbery during the attack.
Crucial forensic evidence, like spent shells, were recovered from the scene.
Authorities have requested members of the public who may have seen the suspects to come forward.
"We know they traveled on foot after the attack, and investigators have been following their trail to establish their whereabouts," remarked an authority figure.
His sister, a close relative, expressed the loved ones are reeling to come to terms with the loss.
"Words fail me. I cannot express the pain," she said.
"It is clear he was a voice for many people. He spoke out bravely about issues not many people were ready to discuss. This is a devastating blow."
She urged the community to not sharing disturbing footage from the scene, noting this was an deeply traumatic time, particularly for Stock's three sons.
Stock was the presenter of Ngicel' iVisa, a television program that aired on a popular local digital satellite entertainment channel.
