NYC's Mayor-Elect, Zohran Mamdani, will opt to take up residence in the traditional Gracie Mansion, departing from the affordable apartment that became a focal point throughout his run for office.

An Iconic Home

Built in 1799, Gracie Mansion has functioned as the official residence for nearly all New York City mayors after the World War II era.

Yet, Mamdani, for whom rent control is a core platform, hesitated to declare he would live there promptly after his electoral win in November.

"The choice was based on keeping my family safe and the imperative to focusing all of my focus on carrying out the agenda for affordability voters supported," Mamdani said in a statement.

Leaving Astoria

He resided in Astoria, Queens, an area famous for its vibrant immigrant populations and international dining.

"To the people of Astoria: many thanks for showing us the best of New York City," he noted.

"Although my address will change in Astoria, Astoria will always live inside me and my work," he added.

Political Debate

In his campaign, Mamdani linked his key pledge – a rent freeze – to his personal living arrangements.

Yet his rivals, mainly one-time governor Andrew Cuomo, challenged Mamdani for remaining in the rent-stabilized unit although he is from a prominent family.

Not All Mayors Stayed

Not every mayor have opted to reside at Gracie Mansion.

Michael Bloomberg, the business magnate, chose to live in his own townhouse on the Upper East Side during his tenure, which ended in 2012.

In his view, Bloomberg argued it ought to be a place for civic gatherings, and pushed for significant upgrades of the aging mansion.

A Vastly Different Setting

As he settles into Gracie Mansion near his inauguration on 1 January, he will find himself in an environment far removed from his modest Astoria apartment.

With its pale yellow exterior, green shutters, and white railings, Gracie Mansion is a picturesque home overlooking the East River.

Inside, the ground floor of the historically styled mansion is furnished to reflect the home's early 19th-century origins.

The compound, which allegedly has several bedrooms, also boasts increased security measures to safeguard the mayor and his family.

Ghostly Tales

Past occupants have suggested that Gracie Mansion also has supernatural lodgers.

Chirlane McCray, the spouse of former mayor Bill De Blasio, informed the press that doors would sometimes open and closed by themselves, and the floorboards creaked eerily.

Former Mayor Eric Adams was adamant. "No matter what anyone says," he insisted in 2022. "It has spirits in there, man."

Affordable Housing Lifeline

Mamdani's current apartment is rent stabilised, which means the city regulates on how much building managers can increase rent each year.

New Yorkers see such units as essential protections as the price of rent rises faster than what many can afford.

Data indicated Mamdani paid about $2,300 each month for his apartment.

Based on data from the real estate platform Zillow, the median rent for a one-bedroom apartment in New York City is $3,500 a month.
