Arne Slot has revealed that the club's hierarchy share his views regarding the recent downturn and he has no intention of discarding their forward-thinking philosophy in search of a turnaround. The manager admitted that six unsuccessful results in seven games was not good enough ahead of Saturday's match against Aston Villa.
Slot accepted the scrutiny was intense before his makeshift team exited the Carabao Cup against the London club. However, he maintained that this urgency to stop the losing streak is not coming from the team's proprietors or football administration following a summer transfer outlay of nearly £450 million.
"Our views align," remarked the manager, whose side will meet the Spanish giants in the Champions League and visit the Citizens in the English top flight.
Slot believes his team "possess an exceptional group if they are all fit and all ready for the schedule ahead". He mentioned that the summer investment in footballers like the German international and Alexander Isak, who is probably unavailable again against Villa through injury, had left the club "in a strong situation for the immediate prospects and the distant prospects".
When asked why his team were taking so long to gel, he replied: "That question isn't constructive. 'What are the reasons?' I offer insights and people say I'm offering alibis. I can come up with five or six reasons why we are underperforming or experiencing losses as we do but, as I always emphasize, there are insufficient justifications to have a performance streak as we had now."
Only Burnley (twenty-one) have conceded more clear opportunities from regular play this season than Liverpool (19). The first-place team, the North London club, have faced two. Yet the manager disputes the team has been overly exposed and claims there is no basis to compromise forward-thinking approach for a more pragmatic style after ten fixtures without a goalless performance.
"In my view we're not allowing many opportunities so I see no justification to modify our philosophy entirely but we must improve in preventing goals," he said.
"Against Manchester United, how many opportunities did we allow? Against Eintracht Frankfurt when we were leading 3-1, we scarcely gave up a attempt on goal. In all the games we have competed in we haven't given up a lot of chances. Definitely not. We do give away a bit more than last season but that is related to us being behind early so you play more openly. But typically I don't feel that our issue is that we allow too many opportunities. Our challenge is we don't score the chances we create."
