Information Available Regarding the Fatalities of the Bondi Beach Terror Attack

No fewer than 16 lives were killed and over 40 were hurt when assailants fired on a Hanukkah gathering at Bondi Beach, an attack Australian police have labeled a act of terrorism.

According to the most recent information, officials have stated the number of fatalities is 16, which includes one of the alleged gunmen. Additionally, 42 injured people were taken to medical facilities.

The deceased are yet to be publicly named, but police believe their ages are between 10 and 87 years old.

London-born rabbi Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first victim to be named.

Described as a father of five children, he was the associate rabbi at a local Jewish cultural centre. Family members and friends spoke of him as “vivacious, energetic, full of life and a very warm outgoing person who was dedicated to assisting others”.

“How can a happy rabbi who went to a beach to share joy and positivity, to make the world a better place, have his life ended in this way?” a family member remarked.

Schlanger and his wife celebrated the birth of their youngest child in October.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman was also among those killed, as stated by his wife.

She told the moments leading up to the attack, explaining they had been standing together when the gunfire started. “He pushed his body up because he wanted to stay near me,” she said.

The pair were both survivors of the Holocaust, having faced immense hardship in their childhood. They had later moved to Australia from Ukraine.

Dan Elkayam

French authorities have announced that French national Dan Elkayam is a casualty.

Publicly, the Foreign Minister declared that France mourned with his family, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This low act is a new, tragic manifestation of a revolting outpouring of antisemitic hatred that we must combat,” the statement read.

One Child

A 10-year-old girl who was rushed to the a children's hospital is among those who had died, authorities stated.

One Israeli Citizen

One victim from Israel was among those killed during the attack, as per multiple sources referencing the Israeli foreign ministry.

Those Injured

Of the 42 people transported to hospital, a significant number remain receiving treatment, with a number in a critical state. The injured comprise two officers who attended the scene.

A wounded man is a bystander who attempted to intervene to confront one of the gunmen. Called a hero, he sustained bullet wounds but is in stable condition in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

Among the injured is Arsen Ostrovsky, a public affairs professional. It has been reported he was wounded and underwent treatment in hospital.

Communicating, he recounted the scene as an “utter carnage,” but also praised the actions of those who rushed to help. He stated he felt it was a “miracle” he was alive.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a community director, was another casualty in the shooting. He told reporters he listened to “a large number” of gunshots.

“Initially, I believed it was something less lethal, but it’s gone into my own skin and into my leg,” he explained. “I sustained a gunshot wound. They bandaged me up. I’m ok.”
