The directorate of the Federal Bureau of Investigation has revealed a major move: the agency will permanently close its current headquarters and transition personnel to already established facilities.
According to a recent statement, the aging J. Edgar Hoover Building, a landmark in downtown DC, will be shut down. The workforce will be stationed in already built buildings in other parts of the city.
This strategic shift will see a portion of agents and staff occupying offices within the Reagan Building, which contained the offices of another government department.
âFollowing decades of unsuccessful plans, we put together a deal to permanently close the FBIâs Hoover headquarters and move the workforce into a safe, modern facility,â officials said.
The initiative is positioned as a way to better allocate funding. Leadership emphasized that this action directs funds to critical areas: on national security, fighting crime, and protecting national security.
It is also meant to providing the modern FBI with enhanced capabilities for much less money compared to renovating the current headquarters.
This announcement comes after previous legal challenges concerning the agency's headquarters location. Earlier, officials from a nearby state had initiated legal action over the termination of an earlier proposal to move the headquarters to their state, arguing that funds had already been allocated by Congress for that relocation.
The J. Edgar Hoover Building itself is a distinctive example of concrete-heavy architecture, planned and erected in the mid-20th century. Its appearance has long been a subject of debate, as it stood in stark contrast to the look of other government structures in the capital.
Its own former director, J. Edgar Hoover, was famously critical of the structure, once lambasting it as âa terrible eyesore ever constructed in the history of Washington.â
