Dracula Movie Critique – Luc Besson’s Passionate Reimagining of the Timeless Gothic Tale is Outlandish but Entertaining

It’s possible audiences aren’t clamoring for an updated adaptation of Dracula from Luc Besson, the celebrated French director for glossiness and bloat. And yet, one must admit: his richly designed vampire romance displays creativity and style – and with its B-movie charm, I’m not sure I wouldn’t prefer to it to Robert Eggers’s recent, solemnly classy version of Nosferatu. A few strange elements appear, including one shot that seems to depict a geographic divide between France and Romania.

Waltz as a Clever but Weary Vampire-Hunting Priest

Christoph Waltz portrays a humorous yet burdened cleric fighting vampires – it’s surprising he never took on such a part earlier – who arrives in Paris in 1889 for the French Revolution centenary celebrations. The same goes for the evil Count Dracula, played by the expert in grotesque roles Caleb Landry Jones using a distorted Eastern European tone reminiscent of Carell’s Gru character of the Despicable Me series. This character suits him perfectly.

The Narrative: A Saga of Heartbreak

The story is this: Dracula has traveled ceaselessly the earth in anguish for hundreds of years since he became undead, a punishment for his faithless sorrow following the loss of his spouse Elisabeta (an inaugural screen appearance for Zoë Bleu, daughter of Rosanna Arquette). the vampire has been searching, searching, searching for a female who would be the reincarnation of his deceased partner. Unfortunately, the lucky lady proves to be Mina (portrayed once more by Bleu), the reserved future wife of the count’s timid estate manager, Jonathan Harker (Ewens Abid), who has recently been to the count’s castle to discuss his property portfolio and the tiny painting of the charming Mina drew the vampire’s attention.

Besson’s Direction and Lighthearted Touch

Besson arranges Dracula’s flashback sequence of international journeys sporting extravagant attire skillfully, and he willingly includes offering funny bits in the style of Mel Brooks – such as the vampire’s constant unsuccessful tries to commit suicide following Elisabeta’s passing, in addition to farcical scenes that follow Dracula douses himself in a certain perfume in historic Florence, which causes him to be irresistible to women. Absurd yet engaging.

Dracula is available digitally starting December 1st and on DVD and Blu-ray from December 22nd. It screens in Australian cinemas from 5 February 2026.
