Numerous exchanges between convicted sex criminal Jeffrey Epstein and one-time US finance chief Larry Summers came to light this week, indicating the pair were close contacts.
These exchanges, dating from 2013 to early 2019, show the two men exchanging intimate â and at times improper â perspectives on political matters and personal connections.
I'm struggling to figure why [the] American elite think if u take the life of your baby by physical abuse and desertion it must be irrelevant to your admission to Harvard,â|âIâm trying to|I am attempting to|I'm struggling to} determine why [the] American elite believe if u murder your baby by violence and abandonment it must be not a factor to your acceptance to Harvard,â} Summers wrote to Epstein in a 2017 communication. âBut hit on a few women 10 years ago and cannot work at a network or think tank. KEEP CONFIDENTIAL THIS IDEA.â
Back then, Harvard University was grappling with an enrollment discussion after a formerly incarcerated womanâs admission to a PhD program. Summers, a former president of the university who stepped down amid a scandal after making gender-biased comments about women in academia, went on to say in the message to Epstein: I pointed out that half of the IQ in [the] world was possessed by women without mentioning they are more than 51 percent of the populace.â
Summers was at one time a key player in the Democratic Party circles â a ex- treasury secretary in the Clinton administration, one of the main engineers of Barack Obamaâs handling to the economic downturn, and a committed figure in the left-leaning punditry. But questions have remained about his connection with Epstein, a former contact of Donald Trump. Epstein was accused of a wide-ranging child sex trafficking operation before his demise in jail in 2019 in New York City.
Following disclosure of a previous set of emails between Epstein and Summers in a 2023 article, a spokesperson for Summers commented that he âdeeply regrets being in contact with Epstein after his legal findingâ.
Democratic Party lawmakers disclosed emails from the Epstein estate this week that imply Epstein was of the opinion Trump was had knowledge of conduct by the now-convicted sex trafficker Ghislaine Maxwell. In reply, Conservative lawmakers published a much bigger batch of 20,000 emails from the Epstein estate.
The documents show that Summers continued congenial contact with the convicted child sex trafficker well into 2019, with the final email exchange occurring only months before Epsteinâs apprehension.
Trump posted on Truth Social on Friday that he would be instructing the Department of Justice and the FBI to investigate Epsteinâs ârole and associationâ with Summers, among other well-known liberal leaders and corporate executives.
In the emails, Summers and Epstein talk about politics â notably Summersâs disdain for Trump â as well as the aspects of philanthropic social networking â and women. Summers, 70, disclosed to Epstein in a 2019 exchange about his overtures toward an unidentified woman, and being turned down.
âshe is clever. ensuring you atone for previous missteps,â Epstein responded in an exchange on 16 March. âdisregard the 'daddy' comment, I'm going out with the motorcycle guy, you handled it well.. irritation indicates concern., no complaining demonstrated strength.â
Summers restated his regret in a recent statement. âI harbor significant regrets in my lifetime,â he wrote. âIâve expressed this previously: my relationship with Jeffrey Epstein was a grave mistake.â
Summers was president of Harvard University from 2001 to 2006. Epstein gave more than $9m to Harvard and its related programs between 1998 and 2008, and was appointed a visiting fellow to carry out research. The university later found Epstein âlacked the educational background visiting fellows typically possess and his application outlined a course of study Epstein was unqualified to pursueâ.
Harvard only discontinued accepting Epsteinâs donations after he admitted guilt to child sex offenses in 2008.
By then Obamaâs profile was growing. Summers would eventually win appointment as director of the White House economic advisory body from January 2009 until November 2010.
After Summers departed the White House, he began requesting Epstein for philanthropic advice for his wife, Elisa New, a Harvard professor working on a poetry project. Epstein and his foundations made gifts to projects associated with Summersâs wife, and the two men met a multiple times between 2013 and 2016, often for dinner.
After media coverage about Epsteinâs donations came out, Newâs charity made a donation âabove and beyondâ of that received to combatting sex trafficking organizations.
