Despite Overwhelming Success, Clair Obscur Creators Aim to Maintain Studio Compact

The game Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 isn't just a top GOTY contender, it’s also a huge financial hit. Studio the development team and publisher their publishing partner announced that the game topped 5 million units in sales, this is in spite of its status as a launch-day addition on Xbox Game Pass.

This achievement was a surprise for the team. “I was strongly believing that we would have an enjoyable experience that would meet reasonable market performance,” a senior team member stated.

The CTO and lead programmer pointed out that Clair Obscur’s review aggregate, rated 93 by critics, came as the most surprising moment for everyone relative to our early predictions and what the reality of the field was. Because when it dropped everybody in the studio celebrated excitedly. The energy was electric.”

The positive reception prompted Sandfall developing a complimentary expansion for the title including novel settings, foes, and boss fights, as announced is coming sometime soon.

Nevertheless, despite the game's evolution, it's unlikely the studio to grow. “We have a talented crew with a strong creative director who has a great vision for the project and also for new ideas. Our goal is to maintain the human scale that made this possible and perhaps create one big game after another,” they said.

The studio's scale sparked plenty of debate upon the title's release. A few well-known creators, like Hideo Kojima, viewed the development group as a perfect example for game development. Although the team is and was indeed a small team versus large developers, a quick look at the game's credits shows that many individuals participated; the French studio contracted a Korean team handling movement and effects, as an instance.

“We will hire slightly more definitely when facing a future production surge in upcoming years,” they commented. “Yet I picture rather a creative atelier with a small number of really talented people that create artistic collaborations.” They emphasized that their core belief as developers “aims to keep the strengths that enabled this success from the start.”

While it may be too early for Sandfall to say specifically what’s next — and trust me, I attempted to learn more — the developers understand their essential identity. “Strategic combat, is integral to our identity of what we built,” the lead programmer said. “It's still premature to announce what will interest us, however, it's crucial to remain faithful to our studio's essence featuring rich storytelling and engaging mechanics that inspires the team.”

They added how this game began with the visionary “work[ing] on his dream game. It is hoped that philosophy we can continue as well for future productions.”
