The President stated on late Wednesday that he had approved the legislation overwhelmingly endorsed by American lawmakers that mandates the Department of Justice to release more records concerning Jeffrey Epstein, the dead sex offender.
This action follows months of resistance from the chief executive and his backers in the legislature that split his political supporters and created rifts with some of his longtime supporters.
Donald Trump had fought against making public the related records, labeling the matter a "hoax" and criticizing those who sought to release the documents public, despite vowing their release on the campaign trail.
Nevertheless he changed direction in recent days after it become clear the legislative chamber would approve the bill. The president said: "Everything is transparent".
The details are unknown what the agency will release in following the measure – the legislation details a host of various records that should be made public, but includes exemptions for some materials.
The bill calls for the chief law enforcement officer to make unclassified Epstein-connected records accessible to the public "in a searchable and downloadable format", encompassing every inquiry into Jeffrey Epstein, his associate his accomplice, aircraft records and movement logs, people referenced or named in association with his crimes, institutions that were tied to his exploitation or money operations, immunity deals and additional legal settlements, internal communications about charging decisions, documentation of his confinement and passing, and information about possible record elimination.
The department will have 30 days to turn over the documents. The bill provides for specific exclusions, including redactions of confidential victim data or individual documents, any representations of youth molestation, publications that would endanger current examinations or court proceedings and representations of fatality or exploitation.
